Save Big

January 7th, 2009

Have you ever joined a discount club only to bring home a bunch of supersized cans and jars of products that spoiled before you could use them up? You can save money at Costco and Sam’s Club and other pay-to-join discount clubs, but it takes a little bit of preparation.

The following hints should help you avoid common errors and wasted change. 1) When it comes to giant jars, stick to mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, and salad dressing—condiments that you use on regular basis and take a very long time to spoil. Avoid giant jars of spices and herbs, and anything you can’t up in a day or two. 2) Take a calculator and a flyer from a major chain competitor and figure the per ounce price to compare with standard sizes before buying. Sometimes bigger is not cheaper. 3) Don’t buy things you really won’t eat or use just because the price looks low. They’re counting on that. 4) Take a list. If you wander into one of these stores unprepared, you can and will leave with a lifetime supply of licorice dental floss and a gallon of capers, then hate yourself in the morning.
